Operation Crossbow 1965

This film has really terrific miniature effects depicting the operation to defend against and ultimately destroy the German capacity to launch V1 and V2 flying bombs aimed at Britain during the Second World War.

The miniature shots are uniformly excellent with only an occasional wire visible in some V1 launch shots and a few obvious matte lines around some live action plates.

The miniatures depicting the vast underground V2 facility are impressive in scope giving the film an almost James Bond Sci-fi look.

The miniature pyrotechnics are also very effectively done.

This was a film I saw on television late at night as a youth and it left a very deep impression on me not withstanding the first class miniature work and the fact that (spoiler alert) by the end of the film all the heroes end up dead.

Special Effects are supervised by Tom Howard.

  1. If I remember it correctly the explosion sequence from the end was recycled for a number of films, most noteably 'Damnation Ally'.
